How do you wind an automatic watch?
- Turn the crown clockwise (or upwards towards the 12) while in position one (pushed in to the case of the watch as if you were wearing it).
- Keep turning for 25 revolutions, or until you feel a slight increase in resistance. You should see the movement begin running at this time, and your watch will charge its movement as you wear it.
- If you haven’t worn your watch for an extended period of time or the movement has stopped, we recommend that you manually wind your watch before wearing to initiate the movement.
Our automatic movements generally have a 36 hour power reserve, which means your watch will keep going for a full 36 hours when fully wound. Once this reserve has been depleted you will need to wind your watch again. Please be aware that the automatic movement has an outer range of accuracy of approximately thirty-ninety seconds per twenty-four hour cycle.

How do I set the date on my watch?
Pull your watch’s crown out to second position (the first click away from the watch case when pulling out the crown) and rotate it to adjust the date. Once the desired date has been set, push the crown into first position (flush with the watch case). Do not set the date on your watch when the time is set between 9:00 PM and 3:00 PM, as this will affect the watch’s ability to accurately track the date.
PLEASE NOTE: Certain models of watches require different steps to adjust the date display. If the above does not work, please consult your watch’s manual for further instructions.
Why can't I pull the crown out?
If you cannot easily pull out the crown on your watch, it may be a “screw down” crown. Rotate the crown counterclockwise until it springs open, and then gently pull the crown away from the watch. If your watch does not have a screw down crown and you cannot easily pull out the crown, please contact us directly and we will try to assist you further.
How can I shorten the link bracelet on my watch?
Resizing can be done at home using a simple watch resizing kit available online for under $10. If you don’t feel comfortable doing it yourself, please bring your watch to a jeweler to remove the links for you.
What is a Krysterna crystal?
Krysterna crystal is a substance that first appeared in the eyeglass industry, and has been adopted by a select few watch manufacturers. Stührling was one of the manufacturers involved in the early stages of development and testing, and now proudly uses Krysterna crystal for many of our watch crystals.
Krysterna is more shatter-resistant and has more strength over a spread surface area than sapphire, one of the most popular varieties of crystal used in the watch industry.
What makes a watch water resistant?
Many factors help make a watch water resistant, including the thickness of the case, the material that the watch is made of, and the gaskets that form watertight seals at the joints where the crystal, case back, and crown meet the watch case. A quick-hardening liquid sealant is also applied to help improve water resistance. A screw-in case back and screw-in crown, two commonly available features on diver watches, also help prevent water from getting into the case.
How do I know if my watch is waterproof?
Water resistance, when applicable, is listed under the Specs tab of our product pages. If the watch is water resistant, the feature will be listed as “ATM Water Resistant” on the page.
What are the various levels of water resistance?
NOTE: To get the most out of your water resistant watch, avoid hot temperatures of water (such as hot showers, saunas, and hot tubs) as extreme heat can cause the metal to expand at a different rate than the rubber gaskets, allowing water to enter the case.
3 ATM (30 meters/100 feet): Watches with this rating will withstand splashes of water or rain and light swimming, but not suitable for diving or being submerged.
5 ATM (50 meters/165 feet): Watches with this rating are suitable for shallow water.
10 ATM (100 meters/330 feet): Watches with this rating are suitable for some swimming and snorkeling activities.
15 ATM (150 meters/500 feet): Watches with this rating are suitable for snorkeling.
20 ATM (200 meters/660 feet): Watches with this rating are suitable for skin diving.
Diver’s 150 meters (500 feet) specified to meet ISO standards: Watches with this rating are suitable for scuba diving.
Diver’s 200 meters (660 feet) specified to meet ISO standards: Watches with this rating are suitable for scuba diving.
To find your watch’s ATM rating, visit the watch’s product page and click the Specs tab.
Is water resistance permanent?
No. Water resistance depends on several factors, some of which can be affected by wear or simply by time. It is always best to have your watch’s water resistance inspected by a trained professional.
How should I care for a water resistant watch?
To get the most out of your water resistant watch, avoid hot temperatures of water (such as hot showers, saunas, and hot tubs) as extreme heat can cause the metal to expand at a different rate than the rubber gaskets, allowing water to enter the case. If your watch is worn in salt water, immediately rinse the watch with fresh water to prevent salt build-up or corrosion. Certain chemicals, such as those found in chlorinated water and some perfumes or hairsprays, can damage the case seams and gaskets, so be careful when exposing your watch to those elements. Do not press buttons or unscrew the crown when the watch is submerged, and have your water resistance inspected by a trained professional once a year to maintain its integrity.
Can I wear my watch in the shower?
While watches rated above 50 meters (165 feet) are designed to withstand this level of exposure to water, we do not recommend wearing your Stührling watch in the shower regardless of its stated water resistance. This is because the hot temperature of the water can cause the metal to expand at a different rate than the rubber gaskets, allowing water to enter the case. Accidental leakage caused by a rapid change in temperature is one of the major causes of water damage to water-resistant watches, so we recommend that you do not expose your watch to extreme heat or drastic changes in temperature. This is the same reason that we do not suggest wearing your Stührling in saunas or hot tubs as well.
How do I set the day or date on my watch?
The answer depends on the model of watch and the type of movement, you should consult your watch manual for further instructions. The majority of our watches can be adjusted by doing the following: To set the date of the month (26,27,28…) pull the crown out to position one and turn it forward (clockwise). To set the day of the week (Sunday, Monday…), turn the crown backwards (counter-clockwise) in position one. Please do not set the date or day when the time on the watch is between 9:00 PM and 3:00 AM, as the watch movement has begun to change the date/day automatically and adjusting it manually may break the movement. Some of our models utilize a push mechanism, in which case you would use the included pusher or the edge of a paperclip change the day/date.
Why is there a disparity between MSRP and the selling price?
For many years, the one constant across nearly all consumer-related products sold at the retail level was that they were offered in a physical store. These brick-and-mortar retailers have their own business expenses, and it was considered normal for a retailer to get double or triple their wholesale cost for any product sold. In turn, when manufacturers would create their MSRPs (regardless of their category), they would always allow for these markups at the retail level and would then reverse engineer their margins from there.
Please know that while the fair market value of the Stührling timepieces are noticeably less than the suggested MSRP listed for each model, the MSRPs for Stührling timepieces are based on the accepted principles of manufacturing costs within the watch industry, in order to make a fair comparison to other watches in the marketplace.
The mission and vision of Stührling has always been to deliver luxury-engineered timepieces to a broader audience. In striving to fulfill this vision, Stührling continues to focus on ecommerce and alternate retailers. By forgoing a brick-and-mortar presence, we are able to keep the price of our watches more accessible and extend those savings directly to the consumer.
