101: All Hail The Watch Crown

CROWN: An external key to control the inner mechanics of the watch.

CROWNING GLORY

Your watch crown controls complications—sometimes with help from pushers.

Complications are anything your watch indicates that isn't the time from the minute and hour hands.

On a Chronograph quartz watch like Concorso 985 the crown and pushers control
  • Day or date
  • Chronograph functions
  • 30-minute or other counters
On a watch like Celestia 898, the crown is used to set the moonphase.

EXTEND TIME BETWEEN CARE

GENTLY POP THE CROWN ON A QUARTZ WATCH TO LET IT REST. Your watch starts again when you pop it back in.

ANY WATCH WORTH THE WEAR

After you select it and before we send it to you, each Stührling satisfies a 10-point hands-on inspection in Brooklyn.

Since your crown handles significant work, we attend to it accordingly and check that:
  • The crown pulls perfectly to each stop.
  • Complications respond flawlessly.
  • Crowns screw down fully with ease.
  • Water-resistance passes a strict pass-fail.

KEEP IT TIGHT

Your watch is water-resistant partly due to its crown.

A screw-down crown is threaded and works with seals or gaskets to secure your watch's interior from water. A push-down crown can keep water out, too, with a pressure seal. Either is an effective horological solution, but both require that you care for the crown and seals. Replacing seals, especially after regularly swimming in a watch like Dephmaster 893 ensures your crown stays as water-tight as possible.
